The Great Debate Moses Basket or Crib

by admin on September 2, 2009

Unless you have already decided  to use a Crib from the first day you bring your  baby home , you may be perhaps considering  a Moses basket, a  bassinet or even a  hammock for your baby to sleep in for the first few months of life, as unlike the crib they are made with the newborn in mind . As you will be using them only for a short period of time perhaps only 3 or four months , it may make a lot of sense to borrow from friends or family, or even buy used if you can.

Moses Baskets

A Moses basket provides a safe , light weight comfortable sleeping place for your new son or daughter. Most Moses baskets are made from woven palm leaves , although they can be made from maize  the more expensive models are constructed from wicker. Wicker baskets tend to be the most long lasting and durable but unless this is your first child and you intend to use the same  basket for preceding children ,or it is  to be shared amongst friends a family members for their newborns to use, this is not an issue. But these wicker versions do see continued use, either as laundry or sewing baskets, toy boxes ,dolls beds or even planters.

Moses baskets should  have strong carrying handles that meet in the middle across the top of the basket, so that the basket  can be transported from room to room with ease and safety. Most Moses baskets usually come  with a full set of infant bedding and a detachable fabric-covered hood(although undressed Moses baskets are available from certain companies allowing the mum or grandmother if they are handy or particular, to dress their Moses basket in their own style). most Moses baskets also usually come with a foam mattress
A Moses basket can be placed  on the floor next to the bed , or a stand can be purchased separately so that basket can be placed at a more convenient height next to mums bed .These stands can be either stationary or rocking but either style converts the Moses basket into a cute baby bed very similar to a bassinet.

Advantages Of A Moses Basket for a New Born

o The Moses Basket is very portable: easy to move from room to room or from house to house when grandma is available to babysit.
o Because of their extreme portability new mums do not have to rely on baby monitors to make them aware of times when their newborns require attention they can actually see for themselves that baby is ok giving mom peace of mind to go about everyday chores without worrying whether the baby monitor is still working
o Your baby may actually feel more secure in the smaller confines of a Moses basket than a crib, babies have most recently inhabited a womb also a small confined space .

o You and your baby will get more sleep. a baby Moses basket fosters the development of  a good sleep routine if the newborn  is swaddled in a small space, at ease in the knowledge that mum is is standing by. A secure surroundings in the first few months is the foundation for sound, restful sleep patterns later on.
o if mom has had a c-section she  will recuperate from childbirth more readily if she doesn’t have to constantly keep getting out of bed .

o Moses Baskets can be employed  to gradually get your new offspring used to sleeping in the larger crib environment , start by putting your baby to bed in his or her Moses basket inside the larger crib sleeping space.

Safety tip even though a well designed Moses basket has substantial carrying handles that should meet in the middle of the bed ,always  Carry the basket with its  handles held firmly in one hand the other hand should be positioned  underneath the basket supporting the child .

Disadvantages Of Moses Baskets

o Because these baskets are only used for the first few  months, you may consider one  an expensive and unnecessary  purchase if you buy one new

The Crib

Cribs are generally  made from  wood and are usually bought flat-packed and require assembly . They provide a smaller sleeping space than that of a child sized regular type bed ,and for a very young baby offer the safety and protection not offered by a regular bed ,they also sometimes have the additional feature of rocking or gliding motions , which may help a young  baby get off  to sleep. Some of the higher priced models also come with the capacity to be converted into a junior sized regular bed when the time is appropriate.

Advantages Of Buying a Crib for a Newborn

o Some cribs have a Rocking/gliding motion which  may help your newborn infants to sleep more soundly in the first few weeks although not all newborns like the sensation of being rocked.
o Cribs Usually can serve the child much  longer than a Moses basket up to 2 or 2 and a half years or at least until your child starts to try and climb out of the crib by himself..

Disadvantages of Purchasing a Crib for a Newborn

A Crib is not as portable  as a  Moses basket or carrycot, cribs  usually have to be situated in bedrooms possibly located on an upper floor in the nursery or temporarily in the parents bedroom, generally situated in a spot removed from common home activities. The new mother has no choice but to monitor her sleeping infant through an intercom or baby alarm .A crib does not allow the same bonding opportunities between mother and child that a Moses basket does
o A crib occupies a much larger area than a Moses basket and is sometimes an inconvenience when situated even for only the first few months in the parents bedroom

o Many Cribs do not come with mattresses You may need to purchase  a mattress separately thus boosting the outlay considerably.

o Well made cribs tend to be more  expensive than  Moses baskets.
