A Moses basket apart from having a wonderful bible story that outlines its origin it is also  the only single item of baby paraphernalia, that the entire “From the Moses Basket team members” ,  can all claim, we all used as infant sleeping quarters, for most of our offspring, at one time or another, hence the ingenious name of our website. The Moses basket appears to be top of most new mums shopping lists when it comes to choosing portable light weight sleeping arrangements for their new son or daughter.
The Moses Basket  has long provided simple, cheap, versatile, portable ,cosy and attractively styled first resting place, for newborns to lay their little heads for generations.

The Bible has us believe the first Moses basket was  woven from reeds and covered in tar to make it water tight as Moses mother  set him adrift in the waters of the river Nile. As she could no longer hide  the three month old Moses from the wicked pharaoh, who had passed a dreadful law “take every newborn Hebrew boy and throw him into the Nile, but let all the girls live.”

Moses’ mother and sister put the child Moses in a basket and placed him in the Nile River. His sister Miriam  noticed that the Pharaoh’s daughter had found the baby in the reed  basket. The Pharaoh’s daughter named the baby Moses, which in Hebrew means, “Drawn forth.” Without revealing her relationship to the child, Miriam  asked the Pharaoh’s daughter if she would like one of  the Hebrew women to wet nurse the baby for her. The Pharaoh’s daughter,  decided to adopt Moses as her own son, agreed to Miriam’s plan , Moses’ sister Miriam ran to fetch  her own mother. So Moses’ mother was able to nurture him in secret, on behalf of Pharaoh’s daughter. This account is found in Exodus, chapter two.

Over the intervening years, the first Moses basket has seen much alteration and refinement from its humble biblical origins, it is now an appealing functional and decorative item of furniture often found near the top of most new mothers shopping lists a comfy portable baby bed  in which new mums can  watch over  her new born  as he safely sleeps .  The modern Moses basket is cushioned and lined with beautiful materials, and offers a warm, snug sleeping environment for new babies. Moses baskets can be  carried from room to room because they are both small and light weight,  allowing you keep a close eye on your sleeping child as you perform your household tasks. While baby monitors and alarms are useful, they’re not the same as being in the room with the child. Being with in almost instant reach, provides new mums with a greater sense of security as they have in-room access and direct supervision. Also when mum herself is ready for some well earned shut eye , she can place the Moses basket alongside her own bed, so when that 2 a.m. feeding all too soon comes due – she definitely appreciates the baby’s proximity.

But Moses baskets  are by no means  a necessity unless of course you desire their extreme portability for using when paying grandma a visit or leaving baby with grandma while she babysits there’s nothing like being able to leave the child in a bed he or she is used to . Otherwise, your little one  will do just fine sleeping in a standard sized crib or even co-sleeper. And since most bassinets and Moses baskets aren’t sturdy enough to continue to  support the weight of the child beyond the first few months of life  , they’re useful only for a short period A Moses Basket is a luxury for both mum and baby but if the budget is tight it is an item that can be managed without freeing up precious cash for more imperatives such as diapers and newborn baby clothes But by the same score the purchase of a mush less expensive  Moses basket that usually range in price from around $60 to $150 for those first few months may be just the extra time needed to save for the more expensive  high end crib that every new mum has her heart set on
